Communication Tools we’ll be using at Word Camp Ogijima

Hi, I’m Harada from Communication Design team.

Today, we’ll be introducing you the communication tools we’ll be using to communicate among participants and organizers. They are called Slack and Remo, and we’ll be introducing you how to register and use them.
※The URL for each tool’s WordCamp Ogijima space will be sent later by email to those registered to WordCamp Ogijima.

Slack

Slack is an app that allows attendees, speakers, and staff to communicate with each other, speakers, and staff mainly via text message.

1.How to register and join Slack with your email address

1) Click on the URL to join Slack

This URL will be sent after by email.

2) Insert your email address and click “Continue with Email”

3)You’ll get a message asking you to look at the mailbox with the email address you just gave

4)Open the email titled “Confirm your email to join wcogijima2020” and click “Confirm Email”.

5)Insert your name and password and click “Create Account”

6) Great! You joined the group.

If this is your first time in Slack, you will be taken to the setup screen.

2.How to register and join Slack with your Google account

1)Click on the URL to join Slack

2)Click “Continue with Google” 

3)Insert Gmail address or phone number and click, “Next”.

4)Insert password and click “Next”

5)Click “Create Account”

6)Great! You joined the group.

If this is your first time in Slack, you will be taken to the setup screen.

3.How to use Slack

1)You will see this screen

If you’re new to Slack, the setup will come up after you join the group.

If you’d like, you can fill out an introductory form and set up your profile picture.

2) Start using !

Get in the channel and communicate!

Each of these channels is in a small group. Click on the channel (group) that best suits your purpose. You can enter there and send messages and read back past conversations.

e.g.) When you have a problem, click on the “Info Desk” channel and ask a question.

②③Write and send a message.

You can send a message to the people in your channel.

④⑤Reply to someone’s message.

Take advantage of the thread replies!

This is a feature that shows all comments and replies to a topic in one place. It is recommended to use this function because it makes it easier to grasp the flow of the conversation. Click (4) to open the thread screen (5).

Replying to a specific person OR telling a specific person that you messaged them

Use the Mention feature.

You can send them a message notification by adding @〇〇〇〇(username)

React to people’s messages.

Of course, you can reply with a message, but you can also send a quick stamp, Emoji and reaction with one click.

I’ve shown you many things, but you don’t have to learn them all or be able to use them all.

In the meantime, it’s enough if you can do the following.

1. Join wcogijima2020 group、
2.Move to a channel
3.Send message

Remo(chit-chat room)

We are going to use an application called Remo so that we can communicate smoothly on the day with virtual spaces and video chat, etc among participants, the speakers, and organizers. With Remo, you can pick up the virtual tables in this virtual venue. 

Please join by clicking the URL that will be sent to participants at a later date. There is no need to create an account in advance.

1.Register with your email to join Remo

1) Click the URL that you receive in your email

2)Click “Sign in to join event!”

3)Input ① Name, ② Password, tick the checkbox and click ③ “Join event now!”

4)Click “Let’s get started” to go through a tutorial. Or Click ”Skip and never show again”: to join without tutorial and mic/camera settings.

2.Or you can join with your Google Account, too.

1)Visit the Remo URL we send you to your email.

2)”Sign in to join event!”

3)Click on “Login in with Google”.

4)Select your account.

5)Click “Let’s get started” to go through a tutorial. Or Click ”Skip and never show again”: to join without tutorial and mic/camera settings.

3.How to use Remo

1)

When you enter Remo, you sit at a virtual desk like in (1). Click “Continue”.

You can turn the camera and microphone on and off by clicking here.

People at the same table as you will appear at the top of the screen as shown in (1). Click on “Continue”.

Click this button to chat.

The chat opens on the right side. You can also close the chat with ✖️ in the upper right corner to end the chat.

By clicking profile pictures of other attendees, you can see their details. Click “Customize your nusiness card” to edit yours.

Enter your info as you like.

“Allow camera &  microphon” or you can join without video.

Allow Remo to access your camera and/or mic.

Join the event if the camera and mic work. If not, just join the event by clicking “Join event without camera &microphone” You can always change your settings.

Now you are in our talk room.

Look for you icon ①.

If you couldn’t turn on the camera earlier, you can try again by clicking the red icons on the bottom. Keep your camera off if you don’t want to turn it on.

If you can do the following, it’s okay for the start!

1. Double-click on the table you want to go to
2. Use the camera & microphone icons at the bottom of the screen
