WordCamp Ogijima 2020 FAQ

Hello! I’m Miho@fomifomi0207, one of the organizers of WordCamp Ogijima. Is it your first time participating in an online event? Even if so, we have put together FAQs to help you enjoy WordCamp Ogijima💡.

If you are wondering “how do I prepare for an online event?” or are wondering things like “what are Zoom, Slack and Remo?’, this should help you out.

💭FAQ ‘Before event’

I registered, but I haven’t received confirmation email.

After submitting your application through the official website, we will send an email to the email address you provided to confirm that your application has been accepted. If you didn’t receive an email, it may have been sent to your spam mailbox. Please try searching your mailbox with the search term “WordCamp Ogijima 2020”.

If you can’t find the email in your inbox, please contact us via the contact form or via WordCamp Ogijima’s official Twitter / Facebook.

I received an email confirming registration. Is there anything I should prepare before the event?

Events at WordCamp Ogijima 2020 can be attended in two different ways, depending on the type of session. Some with YouTube Live and others with Zoom, an online conference tool. Pre-installation (free) is required for Zoom. You can install it from the Zoom website. YouTube Live does not require any preparation※1.

Check out the timetable page to see whether the content you wish to participate in is streamed via YouTube Live or Zoom※2

※1 The URL for YouTube Live will be emailed to the email address you received your WordCamp Ogijima 2020 ticket, by the day before the event. On event day, please access the URL through your browser or mobile app.

※2 For sessions that use Zoom, tickets for each one must be applied for separately in connpass on the WordCamp Ogijima event page.

How do I use YouTube or Zoom?

Will the presentations be subtitled? Will the Japanese sessions be automatically translated into English?

Yes. The speakers’ presentations will also be delivered via a tool, UD Talk (downloadable), which supports subtitling and translation. UD Talk will display subtitles for the speakers’ presentations and automatically translate sessions presented in Japanese into English, and vice versa. Note that for interactive sessions, translation is only available from the speakers, and is not two-way.

To use UD Talk, you need the iOS or Android app (free). Please download the app from each store in advance.

Which URL should I access at the event?

If you see the YouTube mark on our website in the content you wish to see, join the YouTube Live link at the top of the website to view. Alternatively, we’ll send you a YouTube Live link by email, and you can access from there too. This email will be sent to you to the email address you registered for WordCamp Ogijima 2020.

For “Try(Workshop)”, and “Discuss(Meeting)”, URLs will be sent via email from WordCamp Ogijima’s connpass. It will also be available in the “attendee information” area where only those who signed up at connpass can see.

Can I join from a smartphone or tablet device?

The following talks must be accessed from a computer, but others can be accessed from a tablet device (*PC participation is recommended).

I only want to participate in content that interests me, is this possible?

Of course you can! The schedule can be found in the timetable. Please check the time of the content you wish to watch and access via YouTube Live at that time.

A separate registration is required for workshops, meetings and some sessions. (If applications exceeds the limit, raffle will be held on September 1st. Some are already full and meetings/workshops with remaining seats are on a first-come, first-served basis. This will need reservation.)

🗣FAQ ‘At event’

I can’t hear YouTube Live.

Is your YouTube audio set to “mute”? If so, unlock the icon on the lower left side of the screen. If there is no problem on YouTube, please check your computer’s preferences to make sure that audio is being output.

I was able to hear the audio on YouTube Live, but not on Zoom. Also, my voice doesn’t seem to reach the other person in Zoom.

It may be due to the settings on the Zoom or the volume settings on your computer (see how to use Zoom here).

Is the audio setting in Zoom muted? You need to turn on “Join audio” to make your audio audible to others in Zoom, is it turned on? For more information on how to set up, please refer to Zoom Help Center.

If your Zoom settings are correct, check your computer’s preferences to make sure you have audio output.

What is UD Talk?

UD Talk is a tool that supports subtitling and translation of speakers’ speeches. Sessions held in English will be translated into Japanese, and vice versa.

To use UD Talk, you need the iOS and Android apps (free). Please download the app from each store in advance.

🎉FAQ ‘Afterparty’

I’d love to attend a get-together, but what if I don’t know anyone and it’s online and I feel like I’m away…

Don’t worry! We are preparing a fun program, even if you’re on your own.

For each talk or workshop you participate in during the event, we’ll set up a room for social gathering called a “breakout room” using Zoom (click here for instructions on how to use Zoom). We will introduce ourselves and have a chat with each other. The speakers will be there, so you won’t have to worry about what to talk about. Please feel free to attend!
